Snowshoeing in Chamonix
|
Snowshoeing in Chamonix is a great way to experience all that the mountain surroundings have to offer without putting on ski boots! If you want to spend some time on your holiday away from the slopes and enjoy the natural outdoor environment Chamonix has numerous snowshoeing guides and trails available from beginner’s level to advanced. These range from half days in the mid-mountains that will get you off the beaten track and into the forests where you can fully appreciate the calm and beauty of winter in the Alps to full day treks in the higher mountains where you will be able to walk on the glaciers at the heart of the Mont Blanc range. It can be a physically demanding activity so be sure to choose a programme suited to your level. You can also hire snowshoes from most sports shops, grab a trail map and head off on your own adventure. This is a perfect activity for bad weather conditions or for non-skiers; walkers and nature lovers will love these outings. Don't forget to take energy bars and wear comfortable boots. |

Example Snowshoe Walking Experiences
Panoramic Peak Challenge - The Mt Blanc massif and surrounding Alps provide some of the most stunning mountain views on Earth. There are many lesser summits within easy reach of Chamonix which make worthy snowshoeing objectives for any reasonably fit and determined walker. With our leadership and coaching, and given fair weather, we'll leave the crowds far behind as we gain height under our own steam, and marvel at a stupendous, unspoilt viewpoint, perhaps all to ourselves. Tell us your aspirations and general fitness level, and we'll chose a suitably challenging and rewarding route. |

Torchlit Evening Dinner Walks - Take a crisp, torch lit snowshoe walk after dark to a typical rustic Savoyarde mountain restaurant. Marvel at the clear skies and silent night-time woodland, and enjoy the crunch of snow and ice under foot, as we ascend to enjoy a well-earned traditional mountain meal, such as fondue or tartiflette, rounding off an unforgettable alpine experience. An easy descent on snowshoes leads to our lift back to your accommodation. There are choices both of walking itineraries and restaurants, many of which are suitable for children and families - please let us know your wishes.

St Bernard Monastery Trip - the St Bernard Hospice, the original home of the St Bernard mountain dogs, is a fascinating goal for a day's snowshoeing. Walking in the footsteps of centuries of pilgrims and travellers, we ascend a fairly gentle but sustained trail to the active monastery, on the once perilous St Bernard pass, a gateway through the Alps between Switzerland and Italy. The hospice has provided shelter to travellers since the dark ages. With luck, and given time, we could enjoy some warming and sustaining soup in the monastery refectory, and perhaps a brief tour of this important historical building, before descending to the valley, and our drive back to Chamonix. (Please note that there is a drive of c 90 mins from Chamonix at the start and end of this day walk).
Peak Season Open Group Programmes (4 days) - These organised tours, graded easy-moderate in terms of strenuousness, could be the ideal alternative activity for non-skiers staying in the Chamonix Valley during the main school holiday periods.
